About the ÒJaygee Babysooth¨Ó sounds
¥ In 1979 a harassed dad was experimenting using sounds to calm his own
very fractious baby. In the course of these he got hit upon some - pink noise
with a foregrouind of rhythmic sounds -the ÒJaygee Babysooth"¨ sounds were ÔbornÕ - captured on a
cassette namely " The Baby SootherÓ ª which was successfully used on that
infant for 10 months. What you have downloaded is identical to that original
recording except in format.
¥ In 1980 the sounds underwent 10 months of extensive testing on 324
babies in Maternity Hospitals and homes.
A year later a further 14 home based babies were filmed on video. The
results were astounding - 91% of the infants were calmed by the sounds within
minutes - with times ranging from seconds up to 10 minutes - depending on the
individuals. However it was noted
that @ 20% of parents observed occasions when their baby found the sounds less
soporific than normal - this was because of severe colic or other illness,
which was highlighted through the change in the soothing pattern.
¥
Once started it was found that the ÔJaygee BabysoothÕ ¨ sounds went on soothing
for a long time. Indeed further
research found a quarter of parents claiming use with babies over 12 months
old.
¥ As a bonus side
effect the sounds tended to put a large majority of babies to sleep but
unfortunately it did not effect
the number of times
they wake at night. It did, however, make night waking and feeding a quicker,
and less tiring event
for mum and the whole
family.
¥ The instructions
stating how to use this are below.
These proved the most successful way of establishing ÒThe Baby
Soother"ª and were compiled after consultation with parents and maternity
staff.
¥ Finally - the Jaygee Babysooth‰ sounds were
originally used and tested as a device to stop baby crying after ALL its
Ôcreature comfortsÕ have been attended to. We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that this be used in this way as it ensures a longer, more
effective soothing life.
N.B.
MUST BE STARTED ON BABY WITHIN THE FIRST 12 WEEKS OF LIFE.
These sounds were
extensively tested in cassette form as a device to stop babies crying after
cuddling and conventional
Methods fail, therefore:-
1)
Make sure the baby is checked i.e. has NOT got a soiled nappy; is NOT
hungry or thirsty; is comfortably warm and
snug in his/her cot.
IN THE EARLY DAYS OF USE THESE
FACTORS ARE MOST IMPORTANT SO PLEASE CHECK.
2) Place the player outside the cot near the babyÕs head, or if it is on a flat
surface, about half a metre from the
head end.
3) Switch on the machine to around MID
volume.
Basically the sound has to encompass the baby and initially has to
be fairly loud. Too soft
causes soothing to fail so you need to be just above that level. Experiment
until you find your
babyÕs level.
4)
Turn the TONE controls to neutral. . If you have no tone
control and the CD sounds hiss (which they may do on
Basic players) cover the speaker with a cot
blanket folded several times to form a pad. This gives the necessary bass
level. Turn up the
volume if you do this. If there is an ÔEFFECTSÕ mode - go to P.FILE and switch
the BASS & TREBLE to Ô0Õ
5) LEAVE THE BABY ALONE TO SETTLE. It is easier to do this
if baby is in another room, and it gives you a chance
to unwind. However, once
the Soother is ÒestablishedÓ it will work equally well with baby in your arms,
being rocked,
patted, fed etc. - as
you wish.
6)
If baby is still screaming after ten minutes check through 1-5
and try again. Normally by this time he/she will
have gone quiet and
often fallen to sleep but DO NOT SWITCH OFF AT THIS POINT.
7)
Leave the recording to play for its full 25 minutes. Switching off early
usually results in resumed crying! Use your
AUTO REPEAT facility for
a second play if required.
A FIXED STEREO UNIT
The soothing
sounds have been successfully used
with this type of unit but in practise it is found to be far from ideal
owing to its lack of
mobility and the fact that it is usually in the same room as the family, T.V.
etc.- So it is not useable
in the evenings which
is one of the peak crying periods.
The instructions are
similar to those for a PORTABLE PLAYER ABOVE
1) As instruction 1 above.
2) Place the carry cot or pram Ôhead endÕ
about half a metre from the speaker - or take the speaker to the baby.
3) Switch on the machine to volume level
about midway depending on the power of the unit. (Read 3 above).
IT IS IMPORTANT
WITH THESE HIGHER OUTPUT MACHINES TO ENSURE THAT THE VOLUME IS NOT TOO
LOUD.
Remember too soft
causes the soothing to fail so you need to be just above that level.
4) Switch the BASS and TREBLE off
completely i.e. turn anti - clockwise or slide both to Ô0Õ. On automated
machines
turn ÔEFFECTSÕ to
ÔP.FILEÕ and switch bass and treble to Ô0Õ (You may need to refer to the
PLAYERÕS MANUAL TO DO
THIS) 5) LEAVE THE BABY ALONE TO SETTLE -
See 5 above, and
6)
and 7) also as above..
